Dr Chris Burton BDS MJDF RCS (Eng) of Middleton St George Dental Care tells The Revu why he is so excited about his new 3Shape TRIOS® intra-oral scanner from Straumann and the future for digital dentistry.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your practice?
I graduated from Newcastle University in 2005 and have owned Middleton St George Dental Care since 2008. It’s a three-surgery, mixed practice in a village location near Darlington, and as well as offering a wide range of general dental and cosmetic treatments, we take referrals for implant work and complex restorative cases. My team includes an associate who cares for our NHS patients, a dental therapist, an endodontist and a consultant oral & maxillofacial surgeon who takes care of our implant surgery. As well as my day-to-day dentistry, I’m responsible for the restoration of implants and treatment planning.
Why did you purchase the 3Shape TRIOS?
Intra-oral scanners are nothing new to dentistry, but now the technology has really come of age. I’m not what you would call an ‘early’ adopter, as I’m careful by nature and wouldn’t buy the latest of anything; for example, I didn’t buy an iPhone® until they released version 3. But I felt the time had come to move into the digital dental age and realise the benefits it brings.
The past few weeks have been very exciting and buying the TRIOS has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There are so many advantages to the TRIOS, but ease of use and patient comfort come top of the list for me. I can scan a full arch in under five minutes, less time than it takes for a silicone impression to even set, and, unlike traditional impressions, any mistakes spotted can simply be erased and the scan re-done in minutes with no mess or fuss.
It did take me a couple of weeks to get used to the change, but I scanned everything in sight to get as much practice as I could and now I feel very competent. The TRIOS scans at an unbelievable rate and the whole digital workflow between practice and lab is excellent. I purchased a colour scanner rather than the less expensive monochrome version and the images are stunning. The 3Shape TRIOS is a win-win all round.
What has been your patients’ reaction to the TRIOS?
My patients have loved the TRIOS ‘experience’ and are really impressed by it. It’s becoming a real patient communication tool; the fact they can see their 3D scans in full colour makes everything much more realistic and makes it far easier to explain our treatment plans to them. It’s also terrific for patients who struggle with gagging as I can stop and start, making sure they are comfortable at every stage. I understand that in the coming months TRIOS will launch a patient monitoring module, which will be very helpful in illustrating to patients the changes happening to their teeth over time and to gain an insight into preventive care.
What about the support you have received from Straumann?
We’ve had exceptional training and support from Straumann, in particular Lisa and Stacey, who have worked with us to make sure any of our queries are answered without delay. Customer support is extremely important to me and they have really helped us quickly gain all the advantages of using the TRIOS. When buying an ‘investment’ piece of equipment, I think it pays to work with suppliers who have an excellent reputation and Straumann, in my opinion, are one of the best dental companies in the business.
The 3Shape TRIOS is great. I have no regrets about introducing it into my practice and I would highly recommend it to everyone. Dentistry is at a point where adoption of digital technology is really starting to happen and I think within the next few years it will be commonplace. I am really excited about the future for digital dentistry and I’m looking forward to using it in my practice every day from now on.
