Dr Usman Hameed Intraoral scanning

Dr Usman Hameed, Practice Partner at Standish Street Dental in Burnley, jumped into the world of digital dentistry with both feet and has not looked back since. In a Question and Answer session with The Revu he proclaims, ‘you go digital because you want to be part of the future of dentistry’.

Why did you go digital and choose Straumann to do it?

I’m extremely excited at the potential of digital dentistry which is why I’ve invested in it so seriously. I’m just quite open and willing to see where this will take me. The priority is always patient outcomes and because digital dentistry provides the best for them, I wanted to be one of the first people using it.

We looked at other systems, but only the TRIOS ticked all of the boxes. We needed something flexible, open source, something that looked smart, neat and easy to clean from a clinical aspect. New technology always brings teething issues and the key is good support which makes everything much easier. Because we do a lot of advanced restorative work and work closely with Straumann it makes sense to work with a partner you are used to and one you get on with.

Which intraoral scanner do you use and why?

We use the TRIOS colour wireless scanner in the pen shape. It meets all of our needs as we have multiple sites and then we have several staff over several floors, so we need a really mobile unit. Of all of the options it looks the best, feels the best to use and as it’s an open source scanner there’s lots of flexibility. It’s easy if you are a dentist or if you are a nurse, it’s just so intuitive to use the pen grip and we’ve all adapted to it really well.

How easy is transitioning to digital?

On first receiving the scanner Straumann came in, talked us through the software and scanner and how to use it. As a testament to how easy the system is to use, the training didn’t take long. The scanner has streamlined the whole patient journey. Having an online portal or a messaging centre to speak to our lab through makes everything so much easier. It’s been brilliant – the lab and I talk more than ever, and we plan every stage of all our cases together. It even allows me to work from home using the scans.

How steep is the software’s learning curve?

If you are of the iPad generation, you’ll find the system quite similar. Very intuitive, the unit itself is simple and only has one button. It’s a step by step process and you just have to follow the software. Whenever you try to adopt something new there is always a learning curve, but the software is as intuitive as possible at this moment in time.

How supportive are Straumann?

They have been simply excellent, ever since the initial stages of choosing what we would like to use, to the support we still receive today. With Straumann we found that each member directs you to the most knowledgeable member in that area. We have multiple contacts within the Straumann group and that’s brilliant because we are able to hear different opinions.

How do your patients react to intraoral scanning?

We’ve just had a fantastic response! We are now able to show them exactly what we are doing and it’s all about being open and honest and ‘patient-centric’, the Trios allows everyone to see and be involved with what’s going on. Patients are very keen to be part of this new digital movement in dentistry. They are also relieved they don’t need to have wet impressions in their mouth and love that having impressions is now really comfortable and the chair time is reduced.

Would you encourage others to explore digital dentistry?

Put simply, if you want to move forward you need to have an intraoral scanner. I would absolutely recommend it to any dentist who wants to progress and do really accurate and advanced work and those willing to learn, progress and move with dentistry. There are regularly changes in dentistry; if you could go back 10 or 15 years and speak to dentists at those times, they will all have felt the same as we do now. The scanner is just the next advancement in that process. As I like to say, you go digital because you want to be part of the future of dentistry.
