History reveals that many famous people have struggled with their dentures including George Washington and Winston Churchill who had to take their teeth out to eat! In more recent times it’s alleged that celebrities such as Jon Bon Jovi and the late Lou Reed have had dentures fitted, but availed themselves of expensive bone augmentation and permanently fixed solutions which offer excellent results, but might not be financially viable for most patients.
The UK has over six million people who could be classed as fully “edentulous” and this number is set to rise by a further million by 2032. Many of these otherwise healthy people are committed to ‘active’ aging and good oral health is an essential component of this process. However, large numbers of denture wearers struggle to eat foods they love and battle with denture fixatives, leading to embarrassment and a reluctance to be as socially active as they’d like to be.
Effective solutions for denture stabilisation
Many studies demonstrate an increase in quality of life following the placement of two or four dental implants to stabilise a denture. However, many patients are not suitable for conventional implant treatment as they have insufficient bone and are unwilling to undertake extensive bone augmentation due to cost considerations.
Mini implant solutions could offer an alternative to conventional treatment as they can be placed without augmentation. However, until now their success rates have been poor as they’ve had a tendency to break or fracture.
But now there’s a new strong and reliable alternative. Straumann has developed the Straumann® Mini Implant System which is manufactured using the unique material Roxolid® with the proven SLA® surface. This offers a 35% increase in strength over conventional mini implants to provide both clinician and patient with peace of mind and maximum trust in this effective long-term solution to denture stabilisation.
The treatment is less invasive than conventional implant treatment, offering faster healing times and less post-operative discomfort coupled with a simplified drilling protocol and long-term scientific evidence. The successful use of Roxolid® has been documented in numerous clinical trials with up to 5-year follow-ups and the Straumann® Mini Implant System offers consistent survival rates between 95.1 % and 98.8 % which is documented by different studies after 5- and 10-year follow-ups. It also has a very low prevalence of peri-implantitis (1.8 %) over the 10-year follow-up period and average bone loss of 0.5 – 1 mm after 10 years (baseline defined as implant loading time).
The Straumann® Mini Implant System benefits from an apically tapered implant body design which delivers exceptional primary stability even in the most compromised cases. This ensures patients can then be offered Straumann® Pro Arch immediate load solutions or removable dentures secured using Optiloc® connectors.
A secure connection
Many clinicians are reluctant to use ‘press stud’ type connectors as they wear easily and need to be changed too frequently to deliver patient satisfaction. The Optiloc® system uses a combination of PEEK (Poly Ether Ether Ketone) and ADLC (Amorphous diamond-like carbon) to offer excellent wear resistance, exceptional long-term performance and low friction between abutment and matrix to deliver a low maintenance solution that securely stabilises a denture. This combination of ADLC-coated abutment and PEEK retention inserts have shown significantly less deterioration than other material combinations.
Retention inserts come in a range of strengths from extra light to ultra-strong depending on the needs of the patient, and insert strength can be gradually increased as required to give stability.
Helping patients achieve a better quality of life
Every clinician will have patients who could significantly benefit from treatment using the Straumann® Mini Implant System but it can seem like an uphill struggle to convert these patients to this simple treatment protocol.
If you are not confident placing implants, seek out an experienced implant dentist who uses the Straumann system and refer the placement to them and only undertake the restorative element. Often a patient’s existing denture can be used for the restoration by simply hollowing out the area directly above the implant to make space for the retentive anchor to be secured in place which can save costs and simplify treatment. The cost of these treatments can be relatively low in comparison to conventional implant treatment, but the results are well worth the effort and can be life-changing for the patient who can go on to live an active healthy life without compromise.
