Adrian Beech talks “me time” and weight loss to motivate himself for the challenge of cycling across Spain, despite his warning that he doesn’t look good in Lycra…
I took part in the first Straumann Bike Ride in 2013 and it was incredibly fun. Cycling that sort of distance (450 to 500 miles) is more than most people would ever think they could manage, but with such a professional team behind you and more than a bit of camaraderie it’s amazing what we managed to achieve.
I don’t do long distance cycling on a regular basis – far from it. It was my first ever training ride with Steve Booth, Straumann’s Managing Director, up and down Box Hill in Surrey that really frightened the life out of me and made me realise it was a very big undertaking and I needed to put some serious training and effort into it.
My motivation in training for this bike ride is that it’s a great excuse to get out and dedicate myself to some ‘me time’. As you can appreciate, being a principal dentist means I don’t get a lot of time to just disappear for several hours on my own, so this is my chance to escape from the entire world, even if it’s just for a while.
And to be honest, my other motivation is that I need, and want, to lose at least two stone before September. On the previous ride on the big hills I was slow – quite simply because of gravity and weight. I’ve got plenty of power and momentum on the flat and downhill, but hauling myself uphill was the part I found the most difficult last time around and I’m determined not to make that mistake again.
The bike ride is a fantastic challenge to do and at the same time be able to raise money for Bridge2Aid. It’s also something that’s a bit different. I have a motorbike that I often ride both here and on the continent. Mention to anyone that you’re riding across Spain in September they automatically assume it’s on a motorbike. Tell them it’s a pushbike and at first they don’t believe you, then they say, “You’re mad”, but it certainly makes people sit up and take notice.
