At the end of June a team of Straumann customers were flown out to Berlin to the botiss headquarters for two days of information gathering and the opportunity to ask all about the fine details of the botiss product range.
Three of us from the UK joined a collective from around the world of approximately 30-40 implantologists – whilst Straumann staff undertook their own training programme.
We were given the opportunity to see some live surgery one morning on the mucoderm soft tissue grafting in an amazing practice in the city centre of Berlin called KU64. Later that afternoon we had the extensive range of botiss products presented to us – including many that are yet to be released to the UK market.
It was fantastic to see how the cadaveric range of products are first harvested – from the femoral heads of hip replacement patients and then processed and subsequently manufactured to create a fantastically safe range of biomaterial products with osteoconductive potential.
From a personal standpoint I have always had reservations about cadaveric products due to some elusiveness about donor harvesting, but now having full knowledge of the entire process has empowered me to improve patient communication. This in turn allows patients to choose a safe biomaterial with improved performance compared with other xenograft materials.
Botiss staff were very open to all questions raised, and certainly some of our colleagues from the continent were not afraid to ask all manner of questions!
After a lovely evening in Berlin with our Straumann colleagues we returned the following day for a morning of further case presentation and discussion of the various products in their correct applications. We finished the 2-day event with some hands-on on various dummy products.
We all left for our flight home that afternoon in full preparation to begin running some botiss/Straumann biomaterials courses back in the UK.
